Therapy that doesn't need your culture explained to it.

For first-gen young women and South Asian families across New Jersey. The expectations, the achievement pressure, the two worlds you translate between — understood from the inside, from the first session.

Sound familiar?

The things you've never had to say out loud — until now.

Loving your family and needing something different for yourself can both be true. Therapy here doesn't ask you to choose.

  • You're the family's success story — and quietly running on empty.
  • Saying no to your parents feels like betrayal, so you never do.
  • You've been translating between two worlds since you were eight.
  • The marriage questions started, and your chest tightens at every wedding.
  • You tried explaining it to a therapist once. They didn't get it.
  • You love your family. You also need one hour that belongs to you.
How therapy helps

Fluent by default. Discreet by design.

No translating

You won't spend sessions explaining why you can't "just move out," what an auntie network is, or why marriage timelines feel like deadlines. We start past that — at the part that's actually yours.

Shame, worked with care

As a Certified Shame-Informed Treatment Specialist, I work with the quiet weight underneath perfectionism and people-pleasing — gently, and without ever making your family the villain.

Private, practically

Online sessions from wherever you have a door that closes. No waiting room, no car in a parking lot, no explaining where you were. For adults, no one is informed you're in therapy — ever.

"Log kya kahenge?"

What will people say? Maybe nothing — because they won't know. Therapy here is confidential, online, and yours alone. The only person who has to be ready is you.

Why me, for this

Understood from the inside — not studied from the outside.

I'm Chandni Kapadia — a Columbia-trained Licensed Professional Counselor, and someone who grew up inside the same in-between you did. The achievement pressure, the family loyalty, the things that stay unsaid at the dinner table: you won't have to explain them to me first.

My work blends evidence-based care (CBT, DBT, ACT) with shame-informed treatment — practical, warm, and respectful of the family you love, even when it's complicated.

Bright Room Therapy is rooted in Central New Jersey — Edison and the towns around it, home to the densest Indian-American community in the country. Sessions are online across the state, but this practice was built here, around the families and expectations it understands from the inside. More about Chandni →

No pressure, ever

What happens when you reach out.

1

You send one email

A sentence is enough. "I think I need some support" counts. You'll hear back within one business day — to your inbox, no calls you didn't ask for.

2

We talk for 15 minutes

A free, no-commitment call. You ask anything — including "how does no one find out?" If we're not the right fit, you'll leave with a good referral.

3

You pick the pace

Weekly, every other week — whatever your life allows. Sessions are online, private, and yours.

Asked quietly

The questions you'd rather not ask out loud.

Will my family find out I'm in therapy?

If you're an adult: no. Your care is confidential — no calls home, no mail, nothing posted. Sessions are online, so there's no office to be seen walking into. If you use family insurance, we'll talk through exactly what (if anything) could appear on statements, and private-pay options if you'd rather keep it fully separate.

Do I have to explain my culture before we can start?

No. I grew up in it. Log kya kahenge, izzat, the auntie grapevine, achievement as love — we can skip the glossary and start with what's actually weighing on you.

My parents think therapy means something is "wrong" with me.

Many parents raised outside this system do. You don't need their permission or their understanding to begin — and if the day comes when you want help talking with them about it, that can be part of our work too. On your timeline, or never.
